Diabetes Self-Management Education (DSME) & Support

Auckland PHO provides free education and support programmes for people with diabetes through the “Living Well With Diabetes interactive workshop”.

Our workshops are a great opportunity to build knowledge, get questions answered, get motivated and connect with other people who have diabetes. We offer workshops throughout the week and in several locations.

Our trained facilitators are from a range of health professional backgrounds and come from diverse cultural backgrounds. We hold courses presented in other languages.

Some topics we cover include:

  • What is Type 2 Diabetes?
  • The Self-manager mindset
  • Healthy eating
    • Carbohydrates
    • What “balance” looks like
    • Portion sizing ( plate model)
    • food labelling
    • food tips and practical ideas
  • Physical activity
  • How to prevent the effects of diabetes on the rest of the body (heart, eyes, kidneys, nerves, feet)
  • Medications – how do they work?
